Swahili Heritage Languages

This is the official site of the Swahili Endangered Languages Project. Karibuni! Its chief aim is to document the Heritage Swahili dialects spoken along the East African Coast, beginning with the dialects of the Southern Somali and Northern Kenya coasts. We use the term “heritage” in talking about the Swahili variants spoken by mother-tongue speakers to distinguish these from the Standard Swahili dialect….. The project also includes two closely related languages, often considered to be dialects of Swahili, but as separate and closely related languages by the collaborators on this project. –Thomas J. Hinnebusch, Project Coordinator and Web Site Developer.
